Summer is not complete with out several visits to the Kelowna Farmer’s market…. YUM! This week, the first of many vegetables are making an appearance. My husband was thrilled to find green beans – which hit the supper table that night. We also brought home red cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and garlic. I was happy to have my camera – the colours are stunning! What delicious foods do you want to bring home to your table? The choices include…
Green and golden zucchini – a powerhouse of Vitamin C and Potassium, this veggie is delicious in raw in salads, cooked into lasagna, or sauteed with a bit of butter and onions. Delicious! Did you know, the longest zucchini was grown in Niagra Falls, Ontario and was 5.2 meters long!
This is probably one of my favorite vegetables – Swiss Chard – I grow it in my own garden. Filled with Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Magnesium, this leafy green is delicious sauteed with onions (add a splash of milk), raw in a smoothie (best with the smaller greens), or added to a salad. My neighbors must wonder what I’m doing when I tear off a piece of leaf from the garden and simply start snacking. YUM!
Kohlrabi – who says you need oranges shipped from across the world in July when you can snack on one of these to get your daily dose of Vitamin C. It also comes with a healthy dose of Vitamin B6 and fibre. Just steam until slightly soft – so good!
For the first time ever, I am growing peppers in my own garden – green, orange, yellow, and red. They are just in the baby stages yet, but I can’t wait to chow down into their sweet goodness. I especially love them chopped up into home-made tacos and stir-fries. However, this year, I’m guessing they may not make it into the cooking pot – they’ll be so delicious straight out of the garden! Again, these veggies are loaded with Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Potassium, and a good dose of fibre. An alphabet of goodness in one simple pepper.
Now, when I saw these beauties, I exclaimed that I’d never seen pointy cabbage before. The fellow behind the stand explained that these grew “special” for the king and queen of the garden. A good story behind a good veggie! And you’ll be eating like a king and queen with all the added nutrition that is hidden inside a cabbage. Don’t tell my kids this, but I’ve been known to shred cabbage and cook it right into my lasagna meat and veggie sauce. So good!
This won’t be my last visit to the Kelowna Farmer’s Market this summer. Every weekend brings new and exciting foods and goodies!
When to go? Wednesdays and Saturdays – 8:00 am until 1:00 pm.
Where to go? The corner of Springfield and Dilworth. Parking is a little tight, but be patient, we’ve always found a spot.
Hint: Leave your dog at home. They are not allowed in the Farmer’s Market and it’s simply too hot to risk leaving them in your car.
Enjoy and experience the Kelowna Farmer’s Market.
